EAST GLACIER PARK DEPOT
GLACIER PARK, MONTANA -USA
Location: GLACIER PARK, MT
Description:
- RAILROAD DEPOT
- HISTORICAL LANDMARK
|
Comments/Directions:
The East Glacier Park depot was built by the Great Northern Railway (GN) in 1913. Directly behind the station is the popular Glacier Park Lodge, one of the half-dozen lodges constructed by the GN at the turn of the century to foster tourism to Glacier National Park. Both the station and the lodge share the same architectural style. The station is constructed of wood siding with large log pillars accenting both the front and the track side of the building. Classic station wagons known as "jammers" transport passengers to and from the lodge.

Located in the attractively restored Northern Pacific Depot (the original gateway to Yellowstone Park), the Depot Museum offers exhibits and videos on the NP in the Pacific Northwest and Livingston from late May to mid September. Livingston was a major shop facility for the NP, the BN, and today Montana Rail Link. The museum also has a gift shop and an adjacent railroad restaurant, the NP Beanery, and sits forty feet from active rail traffic.

The Belton Depot was built in 1910 by the Great Northern Railroad to serve the newly formed Glacier National Park. The railroad also built the historic Belton Chalets hotel (now across the highway) to serve its passengers and visitor to the park. Until the 1930's visitors to the park mainly arrived by train. The depot continues to serve as an Amtrak depot in season but also serves as headquarters to the Glacier Natural History Association.

OREGON SHORTLINE 1903
315 YELLOWSTONE AVENUE
WEST YELLOWSTONG, MONTANA -USA
Location: INSIDE THE HOLIDAY INN IN THE BRANCH RESTAURANT
Description:
Web Site INFO FROM VISIT YELLOWSTONE
|
Comments/Directions:
Inside the Branch Restaurant at the Holiday Inn is the Oregon Shortline 1903. Named for the year it was built, the Oregon Short Line 1903 was constructed for $16,685 as an executive rail car for the Vice President of the Union Pacific. In reference to E.H. Harriman's Presidential rail car, the Arden, which was built in 1900, some who rode on OSL 1903 said, "We out bested Old E.H. on this trip". The charm of the wooden exterior and interior construction was typical of that period. It was retrofitted in 1915 and was renamed OSL 150 at the time. The car has been restored and is inside the restaurant.

Comments/Directions:
This beautiful train station, restored by the Stumptown Historical Society, was built by The Great Northern in 1927 as a stop along the famed Empire Builder route. It still serves Amtrak passengers today. There is a small museum within the station that’s worth a visit for dedicated rail fans. One of the unique outside displays is a “bruck”, a combination of bus and truck used to transport passengers from the train station to nearby Kalispell. Walking into the train station waiting area is like walking back in time. It has the look and feel of train travel as it was in the 30s and 40s. A look outside will give the modern BNSF rail fan much to appreciate. Great Northern NW-3 #181 is also on display at the depot.
