Comments/Directions:
Quaker Square is an amazing piece of history. The Quaker Oats company began in Akron and in 1970 their plant was closed. The building was turned into a hotel and is now University of Akron student housing. Inside the campus eateries are wonderful. 3 original Broadway Limited cars are inside and you may eat your meals in them. There is also Schumacher's restaurant and Ferdinand's Spirits, all 3 have wonderful railroad memorabilia and photos in them. The school store is housed in the mall section of the building and has many, many railroad artifacts on display as well as several model railroads.. An Aerotrain park train is on display as well. There are a ton of interesting historical pictures and articles throughout the building. Across the parking lot is the depot that has been restored and can host banquets for up to 1,000 people. I loved this place, great history.

During your trip you will see the beautiful countryside of southeastern Ohio while traveling the rails of the former Pennsylvania and B&O railroads. You?ll learn about the life, heritage and customs of the coal miners that once worked underground in the many deep mines. The Byesville Scenic Railway is now working to rebuild the old B&O Eastern Ohio Branch from the State Route 821 crossing (near Pleasant City) southwest to Cumberland. Once this 8 mile long section of track is re-opened, the route of our passenger excursion will be 25 miles round trip. After our expansion to Cumberland, someday our excursion train could possibly operate a few miles further southwest near the huge wild animal preserve known as The Wilds to enjoy one of their safari tour adventures.

Comments/Directions:
This rail car was developed towards the end of the Cold War to be able to move the ICBM's around. (intercontinental ballistic missile)
"
Peacekeeper Rail Garrison Car
On Dec. 19, 1986, the White House announced President Ronald Reagan's approval to develop a rail system for basing part of the Peacekeeper Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) force. To increase survivability of this force, 50 Peacekeepers would be deployed in existing Minuteman silos and 50 more would be mounted on 25 USAF trains, two per train. Each train would consist of two locomotives, two security cars, two missile launch cars housing the missiles, one launch control car, one fuel car and one maintenance car. Each launch car carried one Peacekeeper ICBM, in a launch tube that could be elevated to fire the missile from the bed of the car. Overall body length of the launch car is 87 feet and fully loaded it weighs more than 520,000 pounds. The trains would be located in shelters located on USAF Strategic Air Command bases throughout the continental United States, with the missiles on continuous strategic alert. When necessary, the trains could be dispersed onto the nation's rail network, making it extremely difficult for an enemy to target and destroy them. Development of the rail garrison deployment system was terminated in 1991 as Cold War tensions eased. Major contractors for the rail garrison system were Boeing Aerospace Corp., Westinghouse Marine Division and Rockwell International Autonetics.
This prototype car was delivered to the museum in 1994."

Ernest "Mooney" Warther was a master carver who had a special interest in railroading and carved replicas of Steam locomotives. Mooney carved the history of the steam engine all to scale 1/2" to the 1'. The 64 working model carvings are made from Walnut, Ebony, and Ivory and are completed to exacting detail. The carvings have been appraised as "Priceless" by the Smithsonian Institution and a "must see" by railroad enthusiasts. The museum is open 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Daily, year-a-round.

Comments/Directions:
A Lima Berkshire (Nickel Plate Road #779), a Pullman business car, a NKP caboose, a B&O caboose, a 3' Lima Shay and a DT&I depot are on display at separate locations. The Berkshire, NKP Caboose, and Observation Car, as well as the depot are in the park. The B&O Caboose is just off I 75 @ exit 125 and houses the local tourist information bureau. The Lima Stone Shay had been housed in one of the ancillary buildings of the Allen County Historical Society. It was visible from Metcalf Street (1.5 Blocks north of Market Street on the west side) however, the ACHS is remodeling or expanding the site and the loco is not visible currently (9/28/06).
Located off exit 125 (SR 309, Harding Highway) from I 75. Take SR 309 (Harding Highway) west. Turn right onto Bellefountaine Avenue (It actually curves northwest from SR 309 just beyond the exit from the interstate.) and go about 0.5 or so. As you pass Lima Memorial Hospital (on the right), take the first right onto S. Shawnee Street and go about 1 block north to the Park (just across Elm Street). The display is adjacent to the old NKP mainline which South Shawnee parallels. According to some of the folks involved with NKP 765 in Fort Wayne, the 779 is the best preserved and most complete (original) surviving NKP berk. Occaisionally, these preservationists arrange for an open house during which the door to the enclosure is open and guided tours are provided including the interiors of the caboose, observation car, and locomotive cab. Monitoring the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society web site (www.765.org) may provide information about open houses at Lincoln Park. If you're lucky enough to attend one and you want to photograph the exhibit, bring a wide angle lens and at least one flash unit. The DT&I station is very close by and photography is easier as it is not in the enclosure. Anyone who enjoys this dispaly should give thanks to John Keller, Sr. (now deceased) who had the presence of mind to convince the NKP to donate this equipment and the City of Lima to preserve them. Mr. Keller was a long time conductor on the NKP and recognized the historic significance of the 779 as the last steam locomotive built by Lima for an American Railroad. As I'd mentioned, the heavyweight observation car was a former business car and, if memory serves, was used by William Vanderbilt at one time. Also of note is the fact that the caboose was the one used by Mr. Keller for many years while performing his duties on the NKP.
The Lima Stone Shay has been moved into a new addition at the Allen County Historical Society at 620 West Market Street, Lima, OH 45801-4665, (419) 222-9426

Comments/Directions:
Marion Union Station was built through the urging of Warren G. Harding who later became the President of the United Sates. At the time he was publisher of the newspaper in Marion. Prior to the building of Marion Union Station, Marion had a dilapidated passenger coach serving as a ticket station. Marion Union Station figured prominently during World War Two. Troops stopped here for canteen service. In 1923, the body of President Warren G. Harding was brought through the station to be taken to his father's home for the funeral. Movie stars including Al Jolson came through the station during Harding's famous "Front Porch" campaign for the Presidency. A non-profit group purchased the station just before the wrecking ball would have torn it down. Restoration is about complete and the station serves as a railfan site for filming trains. It is said to be one of the hot spots in the nation for photography.

Comments/Directions:
The railroad is named after our blacksmith shop which also serves as engine house. A home-built, wood-fired Class A Shay in 5" scale is the prime mover. This locomotive stirred up a lot of discussion on one of the train lists when someone asked what could be built on only a $5000 budget. I replied accurate and truthfully that I built the Shay for only $2000 out of pocket. I state this only to inspire those who believe the hobby is possibly outside their budget.

Comments/Directions:
Entertrainment Junction has been open for several years. The model railroad layout is G Scale and very impressive. As extra fare options, they offer a narated (via iPOD) tour and a behind the scenes tour. Both are very interesting. Someday they will have Neil Young's modular Lionel layout up and running. The museum displays are scattered around the layout and provide general information about railroading. There are areas for kids to play as well. Lastly, they do seasonal displays especially for the holidays. You'll probably want to allow at least 4 hours, maybe more, to see it all. The building is visible from I 75 and the location is easily accessible from the Interstate. It's about 15-20 miles north of Cincinnati. There's plenty of on site parking available. They have a small refreshment stand, souvenir shop, and hobby shop on site.
